内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Eeffects of the non-indigenous mytilid mussel, Xenostrobus securis, on the indigenous intertidal sessile organisms and their zonation on a vertical concrete wall were studied for 22 months in the estuary of the Kino River, central japan. In the control quadrats with no manipulation of the sessile organisms. X. securis formed mussel beds and dominated the substratum with a cover of 60-80% in the middle and lower intertidal zones in winter to early summer. In the late summer and early autumn, many mussels died and fell away from the wall, and the cover of X. securis decreated to 10-20%. Then, barnacles, of which most were the indigenous Fistulobalanus kondakovi, settled on the bare substratum, grew, and formed barnacle stands until November. X. securis then settled among the barnacle stands at a later stage, grew and covered the barnacles, and dominated the substratum during winter. In the upper intertidal zone, F. Kondakovi covered half of the subtratum throughout a year, while indigenous algae, such as Ulva spp. and Gloiopeltis tenax, settled and flourished on the barnacles and remaining bare substratum during spring and autumn, respectively. In the evperimental quadrats where all sessile organsims were artificially removed once in July, the seasonal changes in the cover of sessile organisms were similar to those in the control quadrats in all three zones. In another experimental quadrat where all sessile organisms wewe removed monthly, mass settlements of Ulva spp., F. kondakovi. X. securis, and G. tenax occurred successively during winter. early summer, late summer, and autumn, respectively. These results suggest that X. securis had a negative impact on the native intertidal zonation of indigenous organisms by dominating the middle and lower zones from winter to early summer.
